Job Description

The Center for Court Innovation, a project of the Fund for the City of New York, is a non-profit organization that promotes new thinking about how to reduce crime, violence and victimization and strengthen communities. The Center creates operating projects that test new approaches to problems that have resisted conventional solutions.

The Center operates four Save Our Streets (S.O.S.) sites, two in the South Bronx and two in Brooklyn. S.O.S. is a replication of the Chicago Project for Violence Prevention s evidence-based Cure Violence program, a cutting-edge gun violence prevention model that aims to reduce and prevent shootings through the use of public health strategies.

S.O.S. Bronx is looking to hire 2 full-time Hospital Responders to provide supportive services to crime victims and their family members. Hospital Responders are notified when a victim of a gunshot wound, stabbing or other assault-related injury is taken to Lincoln Hospital. A Responder is expected to report immediately to the hospital where he/she will stay with the victim and actively work to de-escalate traumatized and angry family members and friends who may be planning retaliatory violence. The Responders will help the victim and their family at the hospital cope with their shock and their grief, while working with the greater S.O.S. team to identify and intervene with others in the neighborhood most likely to instigate retaliation. The overall goal is to keep the peace and prevent further shootings and deaths.

The Hospital Responder will report directly to the Hospital Responder Coordinator and Program Manager.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Report to Lincoln Hospital to meet with crime victims and their friends and family members.
  • Educate the victim and family members about trauma and typical responses to trauma and chronic stress.
  • Work closely with staff from SOS South Bronx and Morrisania, other Bronx Cure Violence partners, Guns Down Life Up and Lincoln Hospital to reduce the possibility of retaliatory violence and the return of the victim to the hospital.
  • Encourage victims to involve themselves in stopping the cycle of violence.
  • For selected victims, schedule and conduct home visits upon the release of the victim from the hospital.
  • Provide feedback to Hospital Responder Coordinator and Program Manager on the hospital protocol and making recommendations for improving the quality and success of the program.
  • Program activities may include having a scheduled shift in the Emergency Department and/or responding in an on-call manner.
  • Ensure that the data regarding hospital calls and responses is kept up to date and notify leadership if there are significant trends.
  • Work with Hospital Responder Coordinator to ensure that there is back-up coverage at times the Hospital Responder is not working.
  • Complete a daily log which includes hospital activations, interruptions, de-escalations, case notes and referrals.
  • Identify individuals who are high risk in order to connect them with Cure Violence programs to help them rethink the impulse to act violently and redirect their lives in more positive directions
  • Provide clients with support and linkages to programs within their zip code and opportunities in the community (e.g., job programs, GED, drug treatment, and mentoring)
  • Conduct outreach to the Lincoln Hospital Community (individually and as a team member) to build strong relationships with other stakeholders, youth, residents, businesses, and hospital staff.
  • Participate in responses to shootings that take place in the target area of Save Our Streets Bronx
  • Report to the Hospital Responder Coordinator and Program Manager and keep him/her informed of all relevant hospital activities
  • Plan, attend and help facilitate events within Lincoln Hospital and Guns Down Life Up
  • Attend and participate in all mandatory staff meetings, trainings, workshops and other team meetings as required.
  • Attend weekly supervision and keep Hospital Responder Coordinator informed of all work related activities.


  • Individuals who are formerly incarcerated or have other experience in the criminal justice system are particularly invited to apply.
  • Associates Degree (or higher) in human services field or equivalent and satisfactory experience preferred;
  • An in-depth knowledge of the South Bronx, with particular focus on Morrisania and Mott Haven area or near this area is highly preferred;
  • Experience and knowledge of at-risk youth and gang involvement, with a commitment to stopping violence and working towards positive community change;
  • The ability to communicate with and build positive relationships with high-risk youth;
  • Comfort managing a large number of diverse tasks;
  • Familiarity with hospital settings is a plus;
  • Ability to work with individuals and families in the midst of extreme crisis;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Able to pass drug screening;
  • The ability to use a computer and Microsoft Office required
  • Strong team skills and ability to work in a fast paced environment;
  • Strong administrative and computer skills for timely comprehensive tracking;

Position Type: Full Time (MUST be able to work a flexible schedule of late nights, over-nights, holidays and weekends. Must be able to report to the hospital when on call.)
