Job Description

The Center for Court Innovation is a non-profit organization that works to create a more effective and humane justice system by performing original research and helping launch reforms around the world. The Center creates operating projects that have been documented to reduce the use of jail and prison, assist victims of crime, and strengthen communities. Nationally and internationally, the Center performs original research and provides consulting services to justice innovators.

Operating out of Bronx County Criminal Court, Bronx Community Solutions offers criminal justice programming in the areas of pretrial diversion programming thru regular monitoring and referral services to misdemeanor and non-violent felony defendants whose cases are pending; and alternative to Incarceration programming for non-violent crimes by providing additional sentencing options for non-violent offenders. These programs reduce the reliance on pre-trial detention and short-term jail sentences and offers defendants the assistance they need to avoid further criminal conduct.

Bronx Community Solutions is seeking a Deputy Director. Reporting to the Project Director, the Deputy Director is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations and assisting with the planning, implementation, management, and evaluation of the project s goals and objectives. The Deputy Director assists the Project Director in supporting a growing staff and programming by overseeing a team of senior staff and directors and ensuring operational efficiency. The Deputy Director will assist in leading other new and current projects as requested by the Project Director.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Oversee the project s supervised release, alternative to incarceration, clinical services, intake, and compliance work;
  • Supervise senior staff and a range of professionals including social workers, case managers, attorneys, interns, and researchers;
  • Coordinate efforts of resource coordinators, intake and clinical staff to maximize effectiveness of alternative to detention and incarceration programming, including social services and compliance monitoring for criminal justice involved populations;
  • Maintain and establish relationships with court players, community-based social service and leaders, programs and other criminal justice agencies and partners;
  • Work with judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, other court administrators, and community leaders and agencies to ensure program operations run smoothly;
  • Oversee day-to-day alternative to detention program management and development;
  • Oversee the quality of program data and materials, refining and improving workflow and case processing when necessary;
  • Devise and implement strategies for improving department cohesiveness and interdepartmental communication;
  • Assist in coordinating research, planning, and reporting activities;
  • Assist the Project Director and the Center s Development team in grant management and writing, which includes monthly and quarterly reporting to funders and opportunities for new initiatives;
  • Develop procedures and protocols to help track and meet grant deliverables;
  • Spearhead relationships in with community leaders, organizations, and business for the benefit of the clients served by BCS;
  • Help facilitate conversations with senior staff to identify, sustain, and explore new funding sources, and to develop and coordinate new initiatives;
  • Host funders and site visitors to Bronx Community Solutions and the Bronx Criminal and Supreme Courthouses;
  • Coordinate and lead special task forces and working groups on relevant issues;
  • Assist the Project Director with administrative responsibilities as needed; and
  • Attend Bronx Community Solutions events after hours as needed.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will hold an advanced degree in law, public administration, social work, or a related discipline and have at least five years of post-graduate experience. At least five years of supervisory experience and knowledge of the criminal justice system required. Candidate must be highly organized and able to multi-task. Candidate must be skilled communicator able to work in multi-disciplinary setting and maintain strong relationships with multiple agencies and organizations both onsite and in the community.

Position Type: Full-time, and on-call hours as needed

Compensation: Salary range starts at $80k and is commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits package.
