Job Description

The Center for Court Innovation is a non-profit organization that works to create a more effective and humane justice system by performing original research and helping launch reforms around the world. The Center creates operating projects that have been documented to reduce the use of jail and prison, assist victims of crime, and strengthen communities. Nationally and internationally, the Center performs original research and provides consulting services to justice innovators.

Bronx Community Solutions, one of the Center s operating projects, seeks to hire Clinician, Behavioral Health for a pretrial supervised release program operated out of the Bronx County Criminal Court. The pretrial supervised release program will provide regular monitoring and referral services to misdemeanor and non-violent felony defendants whose cases are pending Criminal Court. The goal of the program is to provide community-based supervision for individuals who would otherwise be detained pretrial on low bail amounts.

Reporting to the Director of Special Initiatives, the Behavioral Health Clinician will be responsible for providing bi-weekly supervision for Supervised Release staff, monitoring a small caseload of program participants with high needs, specifically those with medical or psychiatric issues, including participants with unstable housing. Referring participants to voluntary social service interventions and helping promote compliance with pretrial release conditions. The Clinician will stay in regular contact with participants, including facilitating in-person case management meetings and sending frequent court date reminders. Additionally, they will draft memos to keep the court informed on participants compliance and will work with program staff to notify court parties if a participant is non-compliant with their supervision level.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Work in conjunction with the Director of Special Initiatives.;
  • Providing bi-weekly group and/or individual supervision for Supervised Release staff;
  • Assisting the Director of Court Operations and the Director of Special Initiatives with the professional development of staff;
  • Auditing of Supervised Release cases as needed;
  • Providing case management services to high need participants including weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly in-person meetings, phone calls, emails and text messages.;
  • Completing intakes of participants admitted to the Supervised Release Program and administering an assessment tool;
  • Providing additional comprehensive, clinically-informed case management services to individuals with mental illness (and, where appropriate, their families) to help address such issues as substance use, mental health, unstable housing and vocational needs;
  • Performing voluntary individual counseling sessions;
  • Providing voluntary referrals to community-based services for unmet needs;
  • Conducting outreach to collateral sources to provide supervision and court monitoring, as needed;
  • Completing all necessary documentation and inputting data into a computer database;
  • Monitoring and reporting on compliance to court stakeholders and working with defense attorneys to bring program participants into compliance, as needed;
  • Assisting with data collection and grant writing, as needed.

Qualifications: LCSW required SIFI certified or eligible required. Candidate must have at least one- year supervisory experience. Experience in a court or criminal justice setting preferred. Experience with the homeless and/or unstably housed population preferred; familiarity with housing programs and related community resources to assist participants facing housing instability. Experience with drug/alcohol treatment, mental health services, co-occurring disorders, adolescent development, trauma-informed and strength-based approaches preferred. Candidates must be willing and able to work collaboratively with a variety of court personnel and partner agencies in a high-pressure/fast paced work environment.

Court-based social work is an incredibly unique and demanding area of practice, and candidates must be open to constructive engagement with differing and, at times, competing perspectives.
Must be able to work with people from diverse backgrounds in a culturally-competent manner and be able to communicate appropriately with judges and other court personnel. Excellent organizational and interpersonal, communication and writing skills required. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

Position Type: Full-time

Compensation: Salary range starts at $55k and is commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits package.
